Deciding on an HVAC contractor is definitely something that you need to put some thought into. Since no one expects the average homeowner to be an expert on HVAC contractors, we have put together a list of things you want to know about the companies you are considering.

Choosing an HVAC Contractor Doesn't Have to be Hard if You Know What to Look For

  • Look for a License and Experience– In order for an HVAC contractor to be licensed, they normally need to have anywhere from 2-5 years of experience, be up to date on certifications and trainings, and have an active insurance policy. The company’s website will often have this type of information, but if not, most companies will be happy to provide it to you if you ask. While you’re at it, ask about experience. This alone won’t guarantee you a great contractor, but stability is a sign that the company has been keeping their “ducts” in a row for a long time.
  • Expect An Evaluation– Anytime you are having a HVAC system installed, the company should provide a thorough evaluation of the home’s current system. They will be looking at the square footage of the home, number of windows, the R-value of the insulation, as well as leaks or loose parts within the whole system. When finished with the inspection, they should offer a written estimate with different options and the details associated with each one. These estimates should be fully itemized with warranty and energy-efficiency information listed. Be mindful that the lowest bid isn’t always best. Be sure you know what you are getting and/or giving up.
  • Request References and Referrals– Reaching out to family, friends, and neighbors for referrals is always a good idea. Once you get a couple of names, ask the companies you are considering for some references. Reach out to those individuals with specific questions such as whether they completed the project on time and within budget, conducted themselves courteously and cleaned up after finishing, and tested the system fully when finished. Online reviews can be helpful as well, but take them with a grain of salt. Take the time to read the company replies to reviews if provided.

Alright, now you know what you need to be looking for in a prospective HVAC contractor. This should take the hard work out of the decision making process, even if it can take a little time to be thorough in your search.
